Some Mazda SkyActiv engines can see fuel work its way into the oil, raising the oil level and thinning it — especially with lots of short trips. Here's what it means and how to stay ahead of it.
If you’ve noticed the oil level on your Mazda’s dipstick creeping up instead of down, you’re not imagining it — and you’re not alone. Some Mazda SkyActiv engines are prone to a phenomenon called oil dilution, where a little gasoline works its way into the engine oil. Here’s what’s actually happening and when it’s worth acting on.
What is oil dilution?
Modern direct-injection engines spray fuel straight into the cylinders. Under some conditions, a small amount of that fuel slips past the piston rings into the oil pan. In most cars it evaporates back out once the engine is fully warmed up. In heavy short-trip driving — where the engine never reaches full temperature — it can accumulate, raising the oil level and thinning the oil.
Which Mazdas and drivers are most affected?
It’s most associated with the 2.5-liter SkyActiv engines in models like the CX-5, Mazda6, Mazda3 and CX-30, and it’s driven as much by how you drive as by the engine itself. The classic pattern is lots of short, cold trips — common for around -town Miami driving.
When should you worry?
