Common Toyota & Lexus Hybrid Problems (and What We Fix)

Most Toyota and Lexus hybrid problems we see in Miami are on the gasoline side of the car — EGR clogging, head gaskets, weak 12-volt batteries and cooling leaks — all conventional repairs we handle.

The most common problems we see on Toyota and Lexus hybrids in Miami are on the gasoline side of the car, not the battery — clogged EGR systems and head-gasket issues on older Priuses, weak 12-volt batteries, worn brakes, and cooling-system leaks. Those are all conventional repairs we handle every day. What we don’t touch is the high-voltage hybrid battery pack, the electric drive motors, the inverter, or the electric A/C compressor.

What counts as a “hybrid” repair here

A hybrid is still mostly a normal car. It has a gasoline engine, brakes, suspension, an air-conditioning system, fluids and a 12-volt battery — and all of those wear and fail the same way they do on any vehicle. We service every one of those conventional hybrid systems with OEM parts and our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty. We do not service the high-voltage battery pack, electric drive motors, the inverter, or the electric A/C compressor — but we do service their conventional systems: brakes, suspension, A/C, and 12-volt electrical, plus we sell and install tires.

The hybrid problems we see most in Miami

Symptom Common cause We handle it?
Misfires, coolant loss (2010–2015 Prius) Clogged EGR system + head gasket Yes
Car won’t “power on,” no dash Weak 12-volt auxiliary battery Yes
Grinding or rusty-sounding brakes Rotor corrosion from humidity Yes
Overheating / low coolant Engine water pump or cooling leak Yes
Reduced power + hybrid battery code High-voltage battery aging No — EV specialist
  • EGR clogging and head gaskets on third-generation Priuses (2010–2015) are the classic one — carbon builds up in the EGR passages and can lead to overheating and head-gasket failure. Caught early, it’s a straightforward engine repair.
  • 12-volt battery failure is the single most common “my hybrid is dead” call. Because the small 12-volt battery boots the car’s computers, a weak one leaves you stranded even with a healthy high-voltage pack. In Miami heat these often last only two to three years.
  • Brakes actually wear slowly on hybrids thanks to regenerative braking — but our humidity rusts rotors and seizes caliper hardware, so we still see plenty of brake work.

What we’re upfront about not doing

If your problem is the high-voltage battery pack, the electric motors, or the inverter, that’s outside our scope — and we’ll tell you rather than guess. Being honest about that boundary is part of how we’ve kept Miami’s trust since 1998.

Why Miami is hard on hybrids

Heat is the enemy of two things hybrids depend on: the 12-volt battery and the cooling system. High underhood temperatures evaporate battery electrolyte and stress coolant, which is why we load-test your 12-volt battery and check both cooling loops at every visit.

Frequently asked questions

Do you replace hybrid batteries?

We do not replace or service the high-voltage hybrid battery pack, electric drive motors, the inverter, or the electric A/C compressor. We do replace the 12-volt auxiliary battery, which is a conventional part and a very common cause of a hybrid that won't power on. If the issue is the high-voltage pack, we'll tell you honestly and point you to a hybrid-EV specialist.

Can you diagnose the warning lights on my Prius or Lexus hybrid?

Yes. We can scan and diagnose engine and conventional-system codes — check-engine, misfires, cooling, brakes and 12-volt electrical. If the codes point specifically to the high-voltage hybrid system, we'll let you know that's outside our scope.

Is it safe to drive with the hybrid warning triangle on?

Treat it cautiously. The master warning triangle can accompany anything from a minor conventional fault to a high-voltage issue. Have it scanned promptly — call (305) 445-0948 — so you know whether it's something we can fix or a high-voltage matter for an EV specialist.
